Lathem Biometric

Lathem Biometric is an Atlanta, Georgia based company that has been designing biometric devices since the time this technology began making waves in the corporate world. Actually, their roots hark back to 1919 when they were a fledgling time clock manufacturing company. However, the foresight of the owners of the company, George and his son Louie Sr. Lathem proved to be instrumental in making them evolve into what they are today - one of the forerunning biometric device manufacturing companies.

The main devices that Lathem Biometric produces today are, as the name suggests, dependent on the biometric technology. This technology is an identification technology that identifies people through their physical uniqueness. Features such as fingerprints, hand structures, retinas, etc. can be used to identify a person. These devices have a great use in workplaces for employee identification. When a new employee joins in, they are first required to enroll themselves into the software of the biometric device by placing the relevant part of their body on the sensitive reader area. When this is done, the device stores the information on its internal memory. On subsequent occasions, whenever the person checks in, they are supposed to place the body part in the reader area. The device will then tally the information provided with the information already present in its system memory and based on that, it will provide or deny access to the person.

The PayClock Express is one of their more sophisticated products which have an audiovisual output. Basically a timekeeping device, it also acts as a security measure. Employees punch themselves in with the help of a contactless smart card. The device has an icon that changes color to red or green to show that the employee has been punched in. At the same time, the information about the person's clocking in time will be recorded on an internal system. The employee will also be greeted with a cheerful audio message upon acceptance of the identifying information.

There are other PayClock products that are not as sophisticated as this one, in the range of PayClock EZ and PayClock Pro. These devices use biometric information like fingerprints or swipe cards to identify the employee. All of them are time recording devices too, and they are connected with a corresponding software program.

The main purpose of the products of Lathem Biometric is to increase the security of the workplace by providing control access to the employees. But they have another major use too. They are very helpful during the employee billing process. When the payroll needs to be generated, the information from the software program is used to automate the billing. Factors such as overtime can be taken into account accurately. It also helps employers to save themselves from being cheated by finding out instances of unauthorized overtime (the software can mark these incidences) and prohibiting any kind of buddy punching, where employees might punch in for their friends.

Lathem Biometric has been in the reckoning since a very long time. The fact that it is constantly evolving, and releasing newer and more secure products, is a major contributor in its worldwide success.
